Lake Eibsee

A crystal-clear natural wonder right at the base of Zugspitze mountain

The emerald-green colored clear Eibsee lake, a jewel of Werdenfelser Land, nestles snugly in the bowl under the stark cliffs of Zugspitze at around 1000 m
(3280 ft) above sea level.

It is 2.39 km (1.5 miles) long, 1.09 km (0.68 miles) wide, up to 35 m (115 ft) deep (depending on the water level) and has 7 islands along the northern shore. Lake Eibsee was created by a gigantic rock slide. It deserves its reputation as one of the most beautiful and cleanest lakes in Upper Bavaria.

You can walk around Eibsee (7.2 km or 4.5 miles total distance, approx. 2 hours) and enjoy the truly awesome views of the clear mountain lake and the mighty cliffs of the Waxenstein ridge, which leads up to the world-renowned Zugspitze mountain. Numerous little picture-perfect coves and idyllic spots invite you to relax in the sun or the shade and swim.

Or you can go on a boat cruise or rent your own boat and go exploring. The Eibsee Hotel is
right off the shore of the lake, and the bottom station of the cable car to the top of Zugspitze
is farther on up.
